Privacy

In short: VERA has no account, no ads, no tracking and no analytics tools. Your voice notes are only converted to text on your device, and reports and photos stay on the device until you share them yourself. The app only connects to the internet to load the speech models.

Microphone and voice notes

VERA only uses the microphone while a test is running. In the “DJI + headset” and “Phone” modes, the app listens for “Hey Vera” and “Stop Vera” during that time; in “Headset with button” mode, the mic is only on during a note. On iPhone, voice commands are recognized by iOS speech recognition, which VERA explicitly uses on the device only; on Android, by the Vosk model. The text of your notes is created by the Parakeet model on your device.

Recordings only stay in memory until they have been converted and are not saved as files. Neither audio nor text is transferred to me or to third parties.

Data stored on your device

  • Your rider profile: name, height, weight, experience and gear, as far as you enter them.
  • Your tests: test name, vehicle ID, VIN, build stage, mileage, setup, route and weather, as far as you enter them, plus notes, photos, times and the battery level of phone and microphone.
  • Your settings.

Everything is kept in the app’s storage and is removed when you delete the app. On Android, the app does not take part in device backups. On iPhone, tests and photos are excluded from backups; profile and settings may be included in an iPhone backup that you create.

Loading the speech models

The speech models don’t come with the app. They are loaded once, when you start the download: the Parakeet model from Hugging Face (huggingface.co), and on Android also the Vosk model from alphacephei.com. As with any file request, these providers see your IP address and the requested file. No notes, reports or profile data are transferred. VERA makes no other connections to the internet.

Permissions

  • Microphone: for voice commands and notes.
  • Speech recognition (iPhone): for “Hey Vera” and “Stop Vera”, on the device only.
  • Camera: for photos in the test report and to read the QR code on the vehicle. On Android you can also add images through the system picker; VERA only sees the image you choose.
  • Bluetooth (Android): to use the helmet headset as microphone and speaker and to read the microphone’s battery level.
  • Notifications (Android): to show the running test and saved notes.
  • Notification access (Android, optional): only so that VERA may pause music apps during a note. VERA does not read your notifications.

VERA does not request your location.

Exporting and sharing

Reports only leave the device when you export them. You decide where to save the file or who to send it to. The app or service you choose is then responsible for any further processing.

Crash reports and testing

If speech recognition crashes, VERA stores a report on the device. It only leaves the device if you pass it on yourself. If you agreed in iOS settings to share analytics with app developers, Apple also provides me with anonymized crash reports. If you join a pre-release test through TestFlight, I see the information Apple provides for this (e.g. name, email address and your feedback). The legal basis is my legitimate interest in an error-free app (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Email support

If you write to me, I process your details (e.g. email address, content of the message, device and app version) to answer your request (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR) and delete them once they are no longer needed for this purpose.

Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection. Contact privacy@ut-systems.com. You can also lodge a complaint with the Austrian Data Protection Authority (www.dsb.gv.at).

Changes

If the way VERA handles data changes, I will update this statement and the date above.
